Discover the modern spencer, singlet and undershirt thermals for Women!

Do you still have nightmares about the old scratchy spencers and singlets that your Mum used to make you wear? They were clingy, itchy and let's face it, ugly. But these "unmentionables" (as our grandfather used to call them) have come a long way. Today, women can now choose from a great selection of modern, beautiful, soft and comfortable thermal garments that they used to only dream about. And you are sure to want to mention them to everybody!
What is a ladies spencer?
Here in Australia, a spencer was a tight fitting singlet or long sleeve top, sometimes ribbed in texture, worn close to the body to provide warmth under clothes. Simply, it was an item of women's underwear designed to reduce loss of body temperature and absorb moisture. At The Foundation, we don't call them spencers, but thermals or layering pieces. Thermals come in a number of types including singlets or tank tops that are sleeveless, long sleeve tops with either scooping necklines, high necklines or polo neck tops and leggings. While a traditional spencer garment was never designed to be seen, some of our thermals are so beautiful they can be worn as outer wear too.
What are the best types of thermals for women?
In our opinion, the best types of women's undergarments for layering are made from breathable, natural fibers such as cotton, modal, wool, silk and cashmere. A sleeveless top or singlet can be good for all seasons and they reduce bulkiness under your arms which can cause sweating. And the thicker the thermal is not always the better. In our experience, snug fitting, (but not too clingy), fine thermals work best.
What fabric is best for thermals?
Modern spencer garments come in a greater selection of fabrics compared to years ago. We have sourced the best collection of thermals across a range of fabrics. Wool is likely the best for warmth and our cotton lined, wool & polyester blend is a popular choice. Modal is another, and when it is blended with cashmere you'll not want to wear anything else. We have wool and silk versions and of course, 100% cotton thermals trimmed with cotton lace that are sleeveless and perfect for all year wear. Polyester can get a bad wrap when it comes to thermal garments but when blended with natural fibers like wool and cotton, it can help when travelling as it is quicker drying.
Can you buy thermals containing cashmere?
Yes you can, and there is nothing better to wear against your skin. In our range, we have singlets, long sleeve tops and polo neck tops (and soon a legging) in modal and cashmere. Beautiful, natural and breathable modal (wood pulp fiber) blended with cashmere, makes a beautiful undergarment for women. It is figure hugging and super fine and so it won't feel bulky under your clothes. When washed, it bounces back to shape like new and it makes a great girlfriend gift.
Can you wear Thermals as clothing?
Our 95% modal thermals are made with 165/170 GSM Lenzing (TM) modal which means it has a heavier weight and can be suitable as clothing or outerwear. Our tank tops and long sleeve modal tops are great for wearing under jackets, cardigans or as a top on their own as they have a smooth, refined finish. They are figure hugging and contain only 5% elastane. Our Modal and cashmere tops are quite sheer with a slightly brushed texture and best worn as a traditional thermal unless you layer them up.
Why do you need a thermal top?
Thermal tops and leggings are great for adding warmth or providing protection for your skin against the irritation of your clothes. The thought of putting on a knitted jumper or sweater without something underneath, makes me start to feel itchy. A modal or cotton singlet or long sleeve top is great for wearing under knits to reduce irritation to your skin. Thermal tops and leggings are also great for travelling as they help you adjust your wardrobe to meet the conditions. A good thermal garment can make a light weight jacket or jumper that little bit warmer when you need it.
What's the best thing about modal and cashmere thermals?
Modal and Cashmere thermals, also make the best sleeping tops! At the end of a long and cold day, I can't bare to take off my modal cashmere thermals which has been snug and warm on my body all day. As we like to say at The Foundation, these thermals feel like a warm hug. There is nothing better than jumping into bed and snuggling under the sheets with it still on - it will keep you snug all night long.
Welcome to the new world of modern thermal underwear for women. Rid yourself of your old spencers that make you itch at the thought of wearing them, and treat yourself to the new luxury thermals at The Foundation.
FAQs
What exactly is a spencer, and is it still worn today?
In Australia, a spencer was traditionally a tight-fitting thermal top, either sleeveless or long-sleeved, worn under clothes for warmth. While the name may sound outdated, the concept lives on. Today we simply call them thermals or layering pieces—and yes, they’re a whole lot more comfortable and stylish than those old-school ones!
Are modern thermals only meant to be worn under clothes?
Not at all! Many of our modern thermals—especially those made from modal or modal-cashmere blends—look so polished, they can be worn as outerwear. Our sleeveless and long-sleeve tops, for example, are perfect under a blazer, paired with denim, or layered with a cardigan.
What’s the best thermal fabric for everyday wear?
We love natural, breathable fabrics like cotton, wool, silk, modal, and of course, cashmere. Modal is lightweight, soft, and holds its shape, and when blended with cashmere, you get the ultimate in warmth and elegance without the itch or bulk.
Can I wear cashmere thermals all day—and even sleep in them?
Yes! In fact, once you put on our modal and cashmere blend tops, you might not want to take them off. They’re perfect for lounging, sleeping, layering, or wearing on-the-go. They truly feel like a warm hug from morning to night.
Do thermal tops really help with skin sensitivity?
They do! If wool jumpers or certain fabrics tend to irritate your skin, slipping a thermal singlet or long sleeve underneath can be a game-changer. Soft cotton or modal makes a lovely barrier between your skin and itchy outerwear.
How do these thermals hold up in the wash?
Beautifully. Our modal and cashmere pieces bounce back to shape with each wash—just treat them gently and avoid the dryer. With proper care, they’ll last you season after season.
Are modal thermals breathable enough for warmer weather?
Definitely. Modal is a breathable, lightweight fabric that works across seasons. A singlet or sleeveless style is perfect year-round and keeps things cool and comfortable without sacrificing style or structure.
Can I take thermals when I travel?
Yes, and you should! Thermals are compact, light, and versatile. A good thermal base layer can turn a lighter jacket into a winter-ready outfit, and because many blends dry quickly, they’re perfect for packing.
Are these modern spencers gift-worthy?
Absolutely. Our modal and cashmere layering pieces make gorgeous, practical gifts—especially for those hard-to-buy-for friends who appreciate quality and comfort.
Are the old spencers really gone for good?
They’re a thing of the past—and we say good riddance to the scratch and the sag! Today’s thermals are flattering, chic, and functional. At The Foundation, we’ve redefined what women’s thermal underwear can look and feel like.
